Jonah 2nd in Nottingham Congress

With £1000 prize for 1st place in the Open, a number of strong players made the trip to Nottingham High School on 23rd and 24th March.

Despite a slow start, Jonah Willow was unbeaten throughout and managed a draw against GM Korneev in the final round to secure equal 2nd and the £120 prize. He finished on 4/5 with GMs Korneev and Hebden. IM Merry was outright winner.

Adi Munshi also had a successful tournament, scoring 3/5 in the Open, only losing to Merry. Armaan Gogia stepped up to the Open and did very well to finish on 1.5pts.

In the Major, Lavanya Maladkar scored 3/5 in a strong section, only losing the first round, while Vidura Mendis finished on 0.5/4.

In the Intermediate, both Joseph Hurst and Andrew Watson scored 2.5pts while Arjuna Mendis had 1/4.

Finally, in the Minor Kian Chan finished on 2/5, though one of his losses was against an ungraded player who won the tournament and had a previous grade of 142!

All results and placings are available on the Notts Chess Association website, including crosstables to each section as for the first time the Congress used computerised pairings.

Overall a successful outing for our players, well done to all!
